Volunteer Celebration Banquet
Congratulations Jackie Tindall 2012 Volunteer of the Year!
Jackie is “employed” as our Adult Ed Coordinator, she is paid for 16-20 hours a week,
but goes above and beyond to ensure her students have every opportunity they need
to achieve their GED. That may mean driving students to be tested on the weekends,
staying late or coming in early, sometimes it may even mean baking everyone’s favorite pound cake!
Congratulations Jackie, it is a well deserved honor!

McDonald’s Awards $2,500 to Middle Tyger Community Center
Middle Tyger Community Center recently submitted a grant to the local McDonald’s locations and the Ronald McDonald House Charities of the Carolinas. $2,500 was graciously awarded to MTCC for the “This Is My Child” Family Literacy Program, which serves adolescent mothers in Spartanburg County School District Five and their children.
“This Is My Child” provides childcare for adolescent mothers so that they can concentrate on setting educational goals in order to graduate, move on to higher education, and into the workforce, all the while learning that they are their child’s first teacher and most important care giver. In addition, the babies and toddlers enrolled in “This Is My Child” are not only provided the highest level of care, they are also provided a setting that is conducive to learning, have qualified teachers, and are able to enter school ready to learn. “This Is My Child” is one of only four childcare centers in Spartanburg County that are federally accredited by NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children).
Terry Stephenson, proprietor of three local McDonald’s restaurants, personally presented the grant check to Wanda Fowler, Executive Director of MTCC. Ms. Fowler said, “Just as Terry, McDonald’s, and the Ronald McDonald House Charities believe that the care and safety of children is of paramount importance, so do we at Middle Tyger Community Center. Providing a safe and clean environment for children to play and to learn is vital; we strive to teach our adolescent mothers the importance of child safety in the home and at play. This grant will assist us to provide two new safe changing tables for our childcare, as well as safe new play equipment. We are most appreciative of Terry, and of the benevolence of McDonald’s in offering us this opportunity.”

H & L OF GREER
COLLECTS TONS OF FOOD
FOR MIDDLE TYGER COMMUNITY CENTER
Associates of H & L Accessory/Wood Group, located in Greer, presented Middle Tyger Community Center with just under two tons of canned goods and other non-perishable food items for the food pantry that is maintained by District Five Family Ministries. Employees were encouraged to donate food items that will be used to share with community members who find themselves in times of crisis. The generosity of the employees of H & L goes a long way in helping assure Middle Tyger Community Center is able to achieve their mission, “…to create healthy families.”
One company associate at H & L learned from her church that the District Five Family Ministries food pantry was in need. She took this information back to the folks at H & L, and the “People Focus Team” Leader, Cindy Edwards, coordinated the food drive effort. The “People Focus Team” realized that during these particularly difficult economic times, more and more families find themselves in need of a little help with groceries so that they are able to make their paychecks stretch further.
Frank Kruczynski, H & L General Manager, said, “The donation made today was collected by the employees at H & L. We have 48 employees who collected a little over 3800 lbs of food – almost 80 lbs per employee. We divided the facility into two teams and had a competition to see which team could come up with the most food. It was close, but one team won by a little over 100 pounds. After the competition was completed, it was agreed the whole group was a winner. Our ‘People Focus Team’ was responsible for coordinating the effort at our site and I would like to thank them and their leader, Cindy Edwards, for this effort.”
The staff at Middle Tyger Community Center is immensely grateful for the generosity displayed by the employees of H & L. MTCC’s Board of Directors, staff, and volunteers are also appreciative of the many other community members and companies who selflessly donate food, supplies, and donations as well as their time to MTCC. Without the support of this benevolent community, the families and children in the District Five Area may have nowhere to turn in times of crisis.
If you, your company, church group, neighborhood, or civic organization would like to hold a food drive for MTCC, please contact Lyn Turner at 864-439-7760. Items that are much needed include canned goods; dry food items (such as cereal, rice, crackers, etc.); peanut butter and jelly; baby food and all baby needs (wipes, cereal, etc.). By donating these products to help stock the District Five Family Ministries food pantry at Middle Tyger Community Center, you are helping to make a positive difference in the lives of many. Oftentimes this is the “hand up” that is needed so that those in crisis may get back on the road to self-sufficiency.
